BAYKO Set #4 Instruction Manual -
August, 1954 - 1st Issue

Altogether Plimpton printed four issues of the sets #0 to #4 manual, primarily for their flagship BAYKO set - set #4. Prior to this date, set #4 was sold with two manuals, the sets #0 to #3 manual and what I call the set 3X manual. It is probable that this manual was also added to set #3X, certainly when the final issue of the set #3X manuals ran out.
This manual overlaps the set #3X manuals printed in November, 1953 and August, 1954 and the sets #0 to #3 manuals printed in April 1954 [Issue 14], January 1955, September 1955 and March 1956.
The manual was printed by J.H. Leeman Ltd., Leighton Printing Works, Neston, Wirral. It has a full colour cover, the rest of the 60 pages are printed in red, green and black on white, gloss paper.
This particular issue was the first manual, of any type, to carry Plimpton's new address of Tabley Street, Liverpool 1 on the Front Cover [below]…
Print coded August, 1954 on the rear cover [below], this manual was designated as the 6th issue, however, this cannot be the case : -
Firstly, there were no less than three typesetting errors, all relating to 15 x 5 Hole Floors, [each actually printed as “15 x 15 holes”] no less than twice on page 7 - in the set contents of both set #3X and Set #4 - and once on page 42 [below] - in the parts list for the Pier model.
These were corrected with a small Information Slip being inserted into the manual [right]. Such typos are usually associated with first editions, and Plimpton did indeed manage to correct them in the next issue.

Secondly, the final issue of the sets #0 to #4 manual, contemporary with the MECCANO takeover, is the 4th issue, so it's unlikely that this one was the 6th issue.
Finally, there was a set #3X manual, date coded one month later, which is labelled as the 6th issue of that manual style. I think the confusion between the set #3X and sets #0 to #4 manuals, not unknown even among collectors today, claimed its first victims here.
One curious omission from this manual is that there is no mention anywhere, either in the script or models displayed, of the Turrets. I know they weren't included in the set #4, but even so you would have thought they would have rated a mention - they do in the sets #0 to #3 manuals. That means that any child lucky enough to be bought a set #4 outright may never hear of such mythical parts.

Size - 250mm x 185mm = 9.8 x 7.3 inches.
This is the 1st issue, but was labelled as the 6th issue.

Number of copies printed - 20,000.
