BAYKO Instruction Manuals

This section shows, in chronological order, the various Instruction Manuals, Booklets and Leaflets which were included with BAYKO sets to help young modellers to get started. Rather surprisingly, in the thirty years or so of production, BAYKO clocked up no less than 62 manuals, not all different of course, though there is a progression of change throughout. If you think averaging roughly two a year is excessive, what will you make of the 16 in less than 3 years, immediately after the second world war‽

The Instruction Manuals generally have up to six main functions : -
Front cover of the very first BAYKO manual for sets 1 to 5 dating from 1934
To give confidence to the adult actually making the purchase!
Front cover of the last full BAYKO manual, date coded April, 1962
Introduce people to the names and descriptions of all the parts.
Provide a general "how it's done" training section.
Provide a graduated range of plans from easy to expert.
Provide other information like set contents and, sometimes, prices of sets and/or spare parts.
Fire the aspirations for a larger set!!!
The way this was done varied significantly over the years. Some documents fulfilled all the roles but sometimes BAYKO used more than one document to cover everything e.g., during the 'New Series' period just before the war, the larger conversion sets contained a number of instruction cards for further models which could only be built with the larger sets.

I'm only going to show the front cover and one other page from each manual on this page, just click on either if you want to see the entire document, including larger images.
I hope you find this section both useful and interesting.
Just a minor piece of information - in many of the images, particularly in pre-war manuals, the models appear to be coloured. This isn't the case, but is a consequence of my decision to try and show only 'pristine' images. What has happened is that the paper has been slightly oxidised/foxed or stained, and, while it is easy to 'clean' the page background, it is often impossible to 'clean' the model images without drowning out much brick pattern work and other details.

I am always interested in expanding the range of documents on the site, so if you have anything that you don't see here and are happy to sell or lend it to me then I'd love to hear from you...

If you're more interested in the models included in the BAYKO Manuals, then these are analysed elsewhere...

Previously I had positioned the final 'New Series' BAYKO manual here...
...however, I now know that that manual, which definitely remains as the final version, must therefore have been produced immediately post-war...
...and hence it has been moved to the newly created section immediately below.
My apologies for the historical inaccuracy...
...I do try, honestly!

Over the years, comments have been made to me, by people who's opinion I respect, about 'New Series' BAYKO set production after the second world war.
Driven partly by the logic that any 'New Series' items would have been sold long ago, and partly by the fact that the post-war changes were so substantial, that surely they would have done a fresh start, I was inclined to reject this...
...however, not for the first time, as my ex-wife Diana will readily confirm, it seems I was wrong!
It would appear that the, "Let's just get something out there and sell it!", motivation must have conquered all, and so we've ended up with the fascinating, post-war, 'New Series' set #1 which Chris Boutal has now unearthed...
...and the need for this new section!
There is another change. The version I had previously described as the final version is indeed that, which means that it too was post-war, [1945/1946], not pre-war as historically described.

Well I believe that's the end of BAYKO's 'immediate post-war period'.
I guess I have to accept that the distinction I have drawn here is a little artificial, arbitrary even, however, this is where I draw the line between what I call the 'immediate post-war period' and BAYKO's peak period.
I'll list my justifications below, but I am comfortable that, arbitrary or not, instinct, perhaps, convinces me that this really was a pivotal time in BAYKO's history, and not just in terms of manuals.

250 mm x 185 mm = 9.8 inch x 7.3 inches
I justify the distinction on four grounds : -
The fact that the, frankly, chaotic period above was now passed.
The standardisation of the BAYKO manuals' size and format from this point onward.
The fact that Plimpton's post-war experimentation with different colours, for both plastic parts and set boxes, was largely behind them.
The fact that the U.K. market was beginning to move as rationing was gradually being ended, and full on BAYKO advertising re-emerged in May, 1949.

PEAK PERIOD BAYKO MANUALS - 1949 to 1959
I'd like to record my thanks to, in alphabetical order, Peter Field, Betty Foster, Malcolm Hanson, Andrew Lance, David Poole and Robin Throp for their help in providing the examples below. If you have a good copy of any manuals not listed here, then I really would love to hear from you...
Separate issue counts were maintained [once begun!] for the three distinct manual types.
Any information shown in this table, which is enclosed in [brackets], is not actually printed in the manual and has been deduced...
...e.g. there are 6 unlabelled 'sets #0 to #3' manuals [Ref. 3] which predate the "7th Issue", so I don't think it's unreasonable to label them as being "1st Issue" through to "6th Issue".
For some reason, presumably marketing lead, the first four 'sets #0 to #3' manuals all had a red border around three sides of the picture on the front cover, which was dropped as the changes preparatory to the launch of sets #3X and #4 kicked in.
Another rather strange detail, which I can't really explain, is that the "13th Issue" and "14th Issue" of the 'sets #0 to #3' manual are, for some reason, credited with the same date - April, 1954.
The 'sets #0 to #3' manual is ever present through this period, in a total of twenty issues, however the situation is more complex for the manuals associated with set #4.
When the set #3X was introduced in 1951, the first 'set #3X' manual [Ref. 11] was produced, though completely without printers coding to give us a clue as to exactly when! These were subsequently also included with the set #4 from its launch early in 1952. The last issue, as far as I can determine, was dated September, 1954, just a month after the first 'sets #0 to #4' manual [confusingly, also ref.11] was produced.
I'd be surprised if Plimpton only sold 10,000 conversion sets #3X in the next five years, when they printed enough 'sets #0 to #3' manuals for 600,000 smaller sets over the same period. It looks most likely, therefore, that the 'sets #0 to #4' manual was included, as standard, in both sets #3X and #4 for some, at least, of the rest of the Plimpton era.
As a negative footnote, the printing standards during this period were often quite poor, particularly in terms of print registration of the three different colours of ink on all but the front cover.

Set #15 Leaflets - August, 1962
One small detail, it looks as if MECCANO redid the typesetting, possibly for every version of the manuals.
This means that there are some minor differences in the appearance of pages between the different versions, but, as far as I have been able work out, no typos!
It has to be said, that the standard of printing here is vastly superior to that of their post-war Plimpton predecessors.
Well, that's finally that, as far as this particular section is concerned, at least for the moment!
