BAYKO Parts List - 1934 to 1936

Detailed below are the complete parts lists for the standard BAYKO sets for the production period from the product's launch just before Christmas, 1934 to 1936. As an aside, there was limited production for local outlets earlier. The two daughters of C.B. Plimpton, BAYKO's inventor, remember packing early BAYKO sets, literally around their kitchen table, ready for Christmas, 1933!

The sets were in the brown, cream and dark green colour scheme.
I hope you find this useful - if you've spotted an error in the list or want to debate any of the figures…
The #6 set was introduced in 1935 and featured the 'Oak' and White colour scheme, as in the model below.
There was no #5A conversion set - as the colour scheme of the #6 set was completely different from that of the smaller sets it would not have made sense. Having said that, Ian Cole does own a conversion set #5A matching the smaller set colour scheme, but, my personal opinion is that this is a later set #5A with its red, white and mid green parts replaced to match.
There were three distinct versions of BAYKO manual produced by Plimpton covering the earliest years of BAYKO production…

…the first manual [left] was produced in 1934 and covered sets #1 to #5.

When set #6 was introduced, the above manual was modified to include the new opportunities by stapling the additional ten pages into the original manual, at the back, just inside the last page.
Plimpton then introduce a comprehensive manual for sets #1 to #6 [right above] which lasted into the next BAYKO production period.

Strangely, both versions of the manual for sets #1 to #6 which were in circulation from late 1935 to 1938 contain errors in the contents lists shown for several of the conversion sets…
…initially I thought this may be due to the contents changes mentioned above, but that doesn't answer all the questions, particularly why they weren't corrected in the later version…
A final anomaly occurs with the 3-Hole Wall Capping, which was not included in the first two versions of the parts list included in the BAYKO manuals, but did finally make it into the last version before the 'New Series' launch. As the 6-Hole Wall Capping was created by cutting down a 9-Hole Wall Capping - obviously leaving a 3-Hole Wall Capping left over - I'm confident that they were always included in the #6 sets throughout this period.

These parts actually first appeared in these Ornamental Additions Sets.
The parts highlighted below were, at least initially, exclusive to the #6 set which was launched in 1935.
These parts were marked in these quantities in the earliest version of the set #6 manual which appeared as a stapled appendix in the set #1 to #5 manual, but were changed / corrected in the first set #1 to #6 manual.

There is also a clear problem with identifying the correct number of Floors in this earliest manual, which refers to “Large Floor Divided (3 sections) - 1”, which I can only assume is one x Small Floor [15 x 11 holes] and two x Extension Pieces [15 x 6 holes], which together are the same area as 1 x Large Floor [15 x 23 holes].
The Large Floor was discontinued, in 1935, and an extra Small Floor was added to sets #4 & #5 and 2 extra to set #6, which had only just been launched at this stage.
The quantities of the items highlighted in green, mainly Rods [known as Wires at the time] were changed to these figures, in 1935. It's worth noting that, even in the latest version of the manual, the numbers of Rods in the Conversion Sets were never updated, despite the changes. Thanks to Bob Burgess for bringing this to my attention.
I can't explain this anomaly at all, but these quantities, as shown for Conversion Sets in the manuals, are not correct, I believe, but are shown for completeness.
I've used this [partial] background to highlight the very different set #6 contents, and generally make vertical scanning a little easier.
