BAYKO Parts List - Late 1938 [to 1940?]

Detailed below are the complete parts lists for the BAYKO sets from this comparatively short production period, comprising just the second half of 1938. In May, 1939, 'New Series' BAYKO sets were introduced. While all the 'New Series' parts were, of course, fully compatible with the parts from this and earlier periods, the set structure wasn't…
Church - actually built from a set #5 of the period
…however, I believe the conversion sets remained available until the war…
This partial extension explains the presentation of the end date in the cryptic heading!
The feature that distinguishes this period from the earlier one is the fact that the #6 set was now offered in standard red, white and green rather than 'Oak' and White…
…which meant that a conversion set [#5A] now made sense…
…and so it was introduced at the same time.
Remember, any set could still be ordered in the 'Oak' and White colour scheme [most familiar from the original set #6] right up to the war, despite the above change, though, in reality, I don't think this happened too often.
The following colour codes refer to the main table [below] : -
At some point during this period, almost certainly around the start of the war, Binding Strips began to be replaced by Straight Tie Bars - the quantities below are only certain for conversion sets #2A and #3A.
Page 6 of the manual showing the Tie Bars oversticker
The image [right, courtesy of Chris Reeve] shows the oversticker used in the manual, bearing the legend : -
“In place of the Binding Strips small metal Tie Bars have been substituted, these being more convenient and less noticeable in the final model.”
These Tie Bars had begun their life in the 1938 20s series special sets.
Image showing two set #1A conversion sets including the austerity labelling of the later example
I own a set #1A conversion set, which seems to cover both the survival up to wartime and the austerity issues. The set [left] has a copy of the above oversticker, on the same manual page, which appears to have been used to completely replace the more familiar contents list visible on the earlier set. [above, right]
These figures [below] for the number of Rods in the Conversion Sets are wrong - unfortunately, this is what the manual says!!! Thanks to Bob Burgess for setting this hare running.
I can't explain this anomaly [below] at all, but these quantities, as they are shown for Conversion Sets in the manuals, are not correct, I believe, but are shown for completeness. Surprisingly[?] all the correct figures are in Plimpton's favour!
I hope you find this useful - if you've spotted an error in the list or just want to add to the debate about any of the figures…
BAYKO was made throughout from BAKELITE
There were two versions of the full manual for sets #1 to #6…
Front cover of the first manual for sets #1 to #6
…but only the later version overlaps this comparatively limited period…
Strangely, both versions of the manual for sets #1 to #6 which were in circulation from late 1935 to 1938 contain errors in the contents lists shown for several of the conversion sets…
…initially I thought this may be due to the contents changes initiated in 1935, but that doesn't answer all the questions, particularly why they still weren't corrected in the later version…
You may want to know more about the full range of BAYKO manuals, if so…
