BAYKO Parts List - 1946 to 1949

Detailed on this page are the complete parts lists for the BAYKO sets manufactured during the immediate post-war production period, between 1946 and 1948.
I hope you find this useful - if you've spotted an error in the list or want to debate any of the figures…
There's a debate in some BAYKO circles as to why the BAYKO set structure changed so significantly after the war…
Partly with this in mind, we now know that there was a brief post-war period of 'New Series' set production immediately preceding this one…
These sets were now in the red, white and apple green colour scheme initially, with a switch to mid green after around 12 months or so.
During this period there were actually quite a few parts produced in unusual colours [right, lower], including Bases [right, upper] as post-war material shortages and war-time plastics development lead to a significant amount of improvisation by Plimpton. The slips are shown courtesy of Bob Burgess.
I should, perhaps point out that there were a small number of deliberate colour experiments, all of which were short lived, not least because they weren't particularly inspiring - unless you are a fan of grey! [There were less than fifty shades!]
This manufacturing approach was far from being unusual at the time, indeed an independent article, printed in 'Toy Trader', in the April, 1946 edition, indicates that this practice was widespread amongst British manufacturers at the time…
A post-war BAYKO model Bungalow on translucent pale green Bases
This was the second BAYKO production period after the war. The relaunch turned out to be gradual over this period as post-war austerity gradually relaxed, forcing variability in the early years, before settling on the standard colour scheme ready for the peak period.
These sets saw the launch of the new parts which I've highlighted in yellow in the main table [below], not a particularly exciting collection, but…
…the Flat Roofs were produced for the first year or so with a diamond pattern rather than the standard tiling to which they subsequently changed.
A post-war BAYKO model Detached House with rare Grey Canopy and Bay Window Covers
There were short term experiments during this period with Grey for these pieces, but it proved unpopular and was abandoned.
Steps and Bases were also briefly produced in Dark Grey.
The Screw Driver, was initially metallic, as pre-war, but was then produced in Grey plastic…
…however, Plimpton also experimented, on an apparently ad hoc basis, with Light Green, Red and even Multicolour plastic, before settling on the more familiar Darker Green of the 1950s. This was probably driven by colour availability rather than intent. Given it was always available, I've always wondered why there are no White ones!
The early post-war period was almost littered with manuals, there were so many variants in such a short period of time…
…in fact there were no less than ten different documents in the three years or so covered by this period…
